Fleetwood council gets down to work

FLEETWOOD'S new parish council took its first historic steps last night – and one of the first was a decision to call itself a town council.

The new authority has yet to get a town clerk and it does not have a penny to its name.

But those were problems the 11 councillors set about solving in the initial meeting at the Marine Hall as 30 members of the public looked on.

Ron Allen was elected chairman and Stephen Clarke vice-chairman as the chief executive of Wyre Council, Jim Corry, guided the rookie councillors through the proceedings and gave advice.

Coun Allen was delighted with the result.

He said afterwards: "I just hope that sometime the public are going to come and help us with this and bring their concerns.

"I've been to many towns and I have never seen a town with a bigger heart than Fleetwood.

"I'm sure the people of Fleetwood will get behind us and they will bring their concerns to the table.

"But we will have to deal with things slowly. We don't want to be making rash decisions.

"We have to be able to crawl first: it's new to every one of these new councillors."

He said it would be important to give people a contact point for the council.

Working on a council website is Coun Paul Treece-Birch who asked about the use of the old Fleetwood crest and other civic items.

Mr Corry said: "It's purely my personal opinion, and perhaps I speak on behalf of the council: there is some regalia from pre-1974 which should be put into use."

He said a visit for councillors to look at the items might be arranged.

Mr Corry suggested

contacting the Lancashire Association of Local Councils for advice about recruitment of a town clerk and what hours he might work.

Because the council could not make a precept to raise money until next March Wyre Council would be prepared to make them a loan.

He cautioned: "What you need to bear in mind is what ever you borrow this year you will have to recover from the tax-payer next year."

All council meetings will be open to the public.

The next will be on Wednesday ,July 1 at Shakespeare Primary School although future meetings will be on the last Tuesday of each month.
