Extra time to quiz murder suspect

POLICE have been given another 24 hours to question the ex-boyfriend of a nurse stabbed to death outside Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Jonathan Vass, 30, has been held in police custody since Monday morning.

Twelve hours earlier his ex-girlfriend Jane Clough was attacked in a car park at The Vic.

The popular 26-year-old, who had worked at the hospital for four years and had just returned to work from maternity leave, died from her injuries.

Murder squad detectives arrested Vass in Miss Clough's hometown of Barrowford, near Nelson.

He was taken to Blackpool's Bonny Street police station where he is being held on suspicion of murder.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police confirmed: "We have been granted an extra 24 hours to question a man on suspicion of the murder of Jane Clough.

"A post mortem has concluded the mother-of one died from multiple stab wounds."

The news came after John and Penny Clough paid a heartfelt tribute to their daughter.

In a statement they said: "Jane was our beautiful precious daughter, loving mother of her baby Imogen and loving sister of Peter and Louise.

"She was a fabulous girl in every sense, she was so gentle and lovely and we are absolutely heartbroken by what has happened.

"We thank the police for working so hard and being so supportive. We thank Jane's friends and colleagues for the care and support they have shown for Jane and for us during this time."

Miss Clough and Mr Vass had a relationship and lived in Barrowford.

Mr Vass was a paramedic based in Blackpool.

However, he was dismissed from his post earlier this year.
