'Evil liar' murderer jailed for life

THE devastated children of a woman stabbed 99 times by her new husband labelled their mother's killer an "evil liar".

Alcoholic Stephen Green stayed in the flat he shared with his wife Carole on East Beach, Lytham, for three days while her body lay in a pool of blood in the middle of the living room.

When police finally entered the flat, they found Mrs Green's mutilated body - and Green in a bathtub with his wrists cut.

A jury of seven men and five women took just over an hour to unanimously convict him of murder at Preston Crown Court.

He was handed a life prison sentence and will serve at least 23 years behind bars before he is eligible for release.

Speaking after the verdict, Mrs Green's son Kelvyn James said: "The details in court have revealed our mum died in the worst possible circumstances and we now have to come to terms with that as a family.

In his defence, Stephen Green offered nothing but lies. He showed no

remorse for his actions."

The court heard how the Greens – both keen bridge players – had been together for 12 years but only married in 2009.

Friends at Lytham Bridge Club described how Green's manner towards his wife changed and he became verbally abusive to her during games.

Then in April 2009, he admitted a common assault against his wife after hitting and biting her.

She took him back but their relationship remained stormy as Green's drinking spiralled out of control.
