'Drunken behaviour and noise' at Fairhaven Lake
A NEW youth shelter could be provided at Fairhaven Lake in order to tackle the anti-social behaviour blighting the beauty spot.
Residents say they are fed up of noise and drunken behaviour which is disturbing the peace.
Late night soccer matches on bowling greens, cars racing down the Promenade and noise from the skatepark ramps are the main complaints.
Police called a meeting to discuss the issues and said action was being taken to try and resolve the problems.
One resident said: "The issue is really respect, in terms of it being a residential area. The skateboard park acts as a magnet for youths and we often have a lot of noise and disturbance driven by alcohol."
PC Dawn Conolly-Perch said moves were being made to create a youth club in the area and added that a youth shelter could also be provided.
Youngsters had been invited to the get-together at the Fairhaven Lake Cafe but stayed away.
However, PC Conolly-Perch said she would pass on what had been discussed.
She said: "The reason we have had the meeting is to build bridges and increase tolerance and respect between local kids using the park and the residents.
"The idea of a youth shelter is something we are looking at and we will consult with the young people on that. It would be at the far side of the lake.
"We are not saying to young people, you cannot come here, but it would be better if they gathered further away from the residents and we could still monitor them. But they would be free to go there as long as they respect the facilities provided for them."
Clifton ward councillor Ken Hopwood and Ansdell ward councillor Ben Aitken, who both attended the meeting, said they would support any moves to provide more youth facilities in the area.
Coun Aitken said: "The kids have to have somewhere to play and the residents want to have peace where they live, we have to find an equilibrium."
Police have also had 1,000 wallet-sized cards printed with details of websites which list youth activities in the area.
