Don't scrap waste plant

THE fight to save a Fylde waste plant is being stepped up, with the town hall officially adding its support .

Everest Road Household Waste Recycling Centre in St Annes is under threat as part of a Lancashire County Council review which aims to cut the number of tips from 24 to around 16.

Liberal Democrats fear the move would cause huge problems for St Annes people.

And now Coun David Eaves, cabinet member for environmental wellbeing, has pledged the council will do everything it can to help.

"The centre is a great and well-used facility," he said. "If it closes, Fylde will only have the centre at Saltcotes Road in Lytham, which will mean a long drive for many residents. Some people will find it impossible to get there – and that may lead to more fly-tipping."

The cutbacks have been linked to a decision by the Tory-run administration at County Hall to freeze council tax.

Liberal Democrat County Coun Bill Winlow, who revealed news of the possible closure, said the tax freeze was "all well and good," but warned: "in the end, it's the man on the street that will pay," claiming further cuts to public services were on the way.

Marcus Hudson, head of waste and minerals policy at LCC, said closure in April 2011 was a possibility.

He said: "For Fylde, the options include retaining the two sites at Everest Road and Saltcotes, or closing Everest Road.

"A task group of members will make a recommendation to the full county council, which will make the final decision."
