Dental contract comes under fire
A LEADING Fylde councillor has supported Conservative proposals for improvements to the NHS dental service.
Coun Simon Renwick, cabinet member Fylde Borough Council, added his concerns to those expressed by the Shadow Health Secretary Mike Penning.
Commenting on the publication of the Health Select Committee's report on dental services, Mike Penning said: "The Government has consistently refused to acknowledge the shambolic current state of NHS dentistry.
"Labour must take responsibility for the failure of their dental contract. It has vastly reduced the number of people able to gain access to an NHS dentist.
"In line with Conservative proposals, the report calls for a return to a registration system and an increase in the range of UDA banding.
"This will help to shift the focus back to preventative treatment and to secure better outcomes for patients.
"We believe that this failed experiment with the UDA-based contract must be scrapped."
Councillor Renwick said: "Locally it is almost impossible to find an NHS dentist – with long waiting lists. I welcome Conservative proposals that will see more people being able to register with their local dentist."
