Delighted residents march after pool is saved

HUNDREDS of delighted Kirkham residents took to the streets today to celebrate saving the town's swimming pool.

Children, parents and grandparents marched down the town's high street to the much-loved Station Road baths.

The parade was arranged following a decision by Fylde Council to hand the running of the facility over to the YMCA.

Bosses at the charity will now run the pool and attempt to bring in a number of improvements including proposals for a steam room, sauna and gym.

The plan is based on a proposal by residents campaign group Rural Splash which wanted the pool to be taken out of the hands of the council.

The local authority had been considering closing the baths due to financial pressures.

Matthew McGregor, eight, from KIrkham, said: "I really enjoyed the march. I thought it was really good and I like what they are doing to save the pool."

Rural Splash and the YMCA now need to raise around 70,000 through either fundraising or additional cash from swimming fees.
