Deadly drugs hit Blackpool
A DEADLY new designer drug – already linked to a number of teenage deaths – has been found in Blackpool.
Police have seized wraps of mephedrone after carrying out raids in the resort.
Officers found the drug – also known by its street names Bubble or Meow Meow – along with cannabis and Ecstasy in a house in Cocker Street.
Two men were arrested.
In the last few weeks mephedrone – which users claim gives an almost instant stimulated high – has been linked to the death of a 14-year-old girl in Brighton and an 18-year-old man in Hertfordshire as well as a number of other deaths in Europe.
It is found in imported plant food which can be bought legally over the internet for as little as 3.
Its lethal side effects include convulsions, breathing problems, nose bleeds, depression and psychosis.
Det Chief Insp Neil Gregson, of Lancashire Police, said: "Mephedrone can cause very bad reactions when mixed with alcohol – people have died from taking this substance – and there is a risk of paranoia and mental health problems in the long term."
