Council workers protest at job cuts

FURIOUS council workers showed their anger and outrage at town hall job losses.

More than 100 staff – all in fear of losing their jobs – packed into Blackpool's council chamber to demonstrate against the cuts.

Scores more protesters were locked out of a special meeting to discuss plans by Blackpool Council to make up to 200 people redundant.

The ruling Tory group was jeered as it tried to justify the cuts.

It has emerged school welfare officers, library staff, family intervention officers and early learning outreach workers are among those hit by the cuts announced after the Government slashed 3m worth of grants.

Around 80 per cent of jobs in Connexions careers service are at risk.

Demonstrators, who held up protest banners outside the town hall, yesterday, warned the most vulnerable sectors of society would suffer if the redundancies go ahead.

Around 260 people have had letters warning them their jobs are at risk although the final number of redundancies is expected to be in the region of 200.
