Council to axe 200 jobs

AROUND 200 council jobs are to be axed as part of £3m worth of cuts.

Blackpool Council today began talks with unions over the redundancies which will impact on people working in departments where Government grants have been slashed.

The job losses are a direct result of budget cuts, imposed by the Government, which were announced on Monday.

It is not yet known if the cuts will be voluntary or compulsory, but the council, which employs around 4,500 people in total excluding school staff, said support would be offered to all those affected.

Blackpool Council leader Coun Peter Callow laid the blame at the door of the previous Labour Government.

He said: "The people who are going to be hit by this are good people.

"They are dedicated staff who are doing all they can for Blackpool and the people we serve, and for me to be in this position is heartbreaking.

"The coalition is tackling the problem, and it will be difficult for all of us.

Coun Simon Blackburn, leader of the Labour group on Blackpool Council, said he was shocked to see redundancies being announced so quickly.

He said: "Making people redundant, taking money out of their pockets and making it impossible for them to pay their mortgages is simply not the right thing to do.

"We need to invest. This panic to cut the most vulnerable areas of council and government business is misguided."
