Council's running us down
HOTELIERS claim their neighbourhood is being deliberately blighted in order to lower the value of their properties.
Businesses on Tyldesley Road say trade has never recovered after a blaze destroyed the Saville Hotel in December 2006.
The building was demolished by Blackpool Council but the adjacent New Ramsey Hotel, which also never reopened, is now in such a state of disrepair it is affecting neighbouring premises.
Hoteliers claim the council has allowed the site – which could eventually be demolished to make way for a 35m housing redevelopment – to deteriorate in order to run down the area and buy up properties more cheaply.
They say town hall bosses are also neglecting drains and street cleansing.
Council chiefs today denied the accusations and said they wanted to enhance the area.
But Kathleen Tilbury, who along with Pablo Mateu runs The Sandwell adjacent to the derelict New Ramsey, said: "This used to be a fantastic street.
"But since the fire, the council has tried to deliberately run the street down so they can come in and redevelop the area and pay us pennies for our businesses."
