A town hall chief has challenged businesses to take on more apprentices.

Garry Payne, chief executive at Wyre Council, hailed the success of the authority’s own apprenticeship scheme..

In a blog post he wrote: “Over the past 18 months we have created 10 apprenticeship roles in various departments.

“Ages range from 17 to 22, with qualifications varying from apprentices with GCSEs to those with degrees.

“All our apprentices are paid, gain valuable experience in their chosen field of work and additional qualifications, all as part of a structured career

development and support programme.”

“As an employer we have seen the benefits of investing in apprentices and are creating a further four roles as a result.”
