Colourful parade's Pride of the Prom
MORE than 10,000 smiles said it all – Blackpool was very proud of itself.
Record crowds gathered on the Golden Mile over the weekend for the resort's fourth annual Pride event.
This year's diversity festival was in a new location with Dickson Road in front of Funny Girls chosen to be at the heart of the action.
The road was closed off to traffic so a stage could be created which hosted live acts including eighties singers Toyah Wilcox and Hazell Dean and SClub 7's Jo O'Meara.
Yesterday saw a colourful procession of floats make its way from St Chad's Headland along the Promenade to the Metropole Hotel at North Pier.
Despite the rain, the parade proved as popular as ever with people of all ages taking part.
Mark Seargent, founder chairman of Blackpool Pride, said the event was growing in popularity every year.
He said: "Everyone has really enjoyed themselves and the new venue on Dickson Road has proved a success.
"On Saturday, we had 17,500 people clicked through into the events area. Some will have been repeat visits but we can certainly say there were more than 10,000 people in attendance.
"There have been people here from across the country including London, Ireland and Scotland and some have even flown in from Gran Canaria. The atmosphere has been terrific."
Andrew Lovatt, 40, from Stoke-on-Trent, was among those enjoying the celebrations. He said: "The event is getting better every year and the new location is great. Blackpool's isn't the biggest Pride event, but it's certainly the friendliest and we never have any trouble.
