Clubs face ruin as casino plan scuppered
ALMOST 1,000 people today pleaded with town hall chiefs: "Don't kill our clubs."
Bosses at the long-standing Number One and Central Bowling clubs claim they could be out of business in 12 months unless there is a dramatic re-think over plans for a new 1.5m casino.
The cash-strapped clubs, both on Bloomfield Road in the shadow of Blackpool football ground, had planned to merge –with the Number One moving into the bowling club.
Plans hinge on the Number One being sold to former Paris Casino owner Pierre Coulon and transformed into a new casino.
But when planning permission hit the rocks – with town hall chiefs refusing to grant a casino licence for longer than four years – the sale was not completed.
Bosses say both the Number One and Central Bowling Club are now in danger of going out of business within 12 months due to debts of more than 200,000.
The blow also leaves Mr Coulon, whose previous premises on Station Road, South Shore, were destroyed by fire, with no venue.
Bowling club secretary Mick Kemp said: "This is going to bankrupt us."
