A CIGARETTE butt has cost a woman £295.

Samantha Smith answered the door of her mother’s home when a council officer called.

The Blackpool Council neighbourhood action team member had a query about wheelie bins at the rear of Erdington Road.

Blackpool magistrates were told by council prosecutor Lynda Bennett that as the officer talked to Smith she flicked a cigarette she had been smoking into the street.

The officer issued her with a fixed penalty ticket for the illegal depositing of litter.

Smith, 27, of Fayles Grove, Blackpool, was found guilty in her absence of the littering offence.

The court heard Smith had not paid the fixed penalty which had started as a £40 fine had she paid swiftly.

Magistrates found the case against her proved and she was fined £100 for the litter offence and was ordered to pay £180 court costs and a £15 victim’s surcharge.
