CCTV cameras could protect baby graves

CCTV cameras could be installed at Fleetwood Cemetery in a bid to deter mindless vandals destroying graves.

But a cash injection is needed first if the project is to go ahead.

Ideas for funding a small scale scheme are being looked at after yobs trashed the tiny graves of tragic babies buried there.

Wyre Borough Council is currently working with the police on several options for CCTV coverage.

Parents Laura and William Brodie, who have been battling for a security system to be installed at the cemetery, welcomed the news - but Laura says she will be happier when cameras are actually installed.

Mr and Mrs Brodie spearheaded a campaign after attacks to the grave of their beloved baby, Elyssa Precious, who was stillborn at 28 weeks.

They set up a petition in Fleetwood and also an online campaign through Facebook.

Laura said: "It is good to hear that they are looking at installing CCTV, but the problems are still ongoing and something needs to be done soon.

"We have already had an encouraging meeting with Wyre Borough Council's enforcement officer Mick Pyke who was looking into security lights for the cemetery and the planting of shrubbery round the area.

"CCTV is what's needed, but when will it happen?

Mick Pyke, Wyre Borough Council's enforcement officer, said: "Vandalism and anti-social behaviour are not acceptable and will not be tolerated at Fleetwood Cemetery."

Since the spate of attacks, the police have increased patrols in the area, contacted local schools and carried out leaflet drops to nearby residents to target the problem.
