Casino plans for Winter Gardens
BLACKPOOL'S famous Winter Gardens could become home to a new casino.
The news comes as Blackpool Council considers an application to keep alive a fire-ravaged gambling business.
Pierre Coulon has applied for planning permission to relocate the Paris Casino to the Number One Working Men's Club on Bloomfield Road.
His casino has been closed since last July when it was badly damaged by flames which spread from the blaze which engulfed The Grand Hotel next door.
Planners are recommending approval of the application, but for no longer than four years, and subject to other legal agreements.
After a four-year period, town hall planners would prefer to see the investment made in the town centre with the Winter Gardens lined up as a possible venue for a new casino.
In a letter submitted as part of his application, Mr Coulon said it "was imperative" new premises were found quickly because up to 60 staff were now without work.
A number of potential sites had been looked at including the former post office on Abingdon Street and the Woolworths store on the Promenade, but none had proved suitable.
However, national planning policy says casinos are a town centre use and the council would rather see investment in the town centre.
