Carr apologises to Blackpool

SWITCH-ON star Alan Carr is appealing for the people of Blackpool to "forgive and forget" after he slated the town in his autobiography.

The comedian and star of The Sunday Night Project spent almost a year living in the resort as a youngster when his father, Graham, was manager at Blackpool FC.

But when Graham was unceremoniously sacked by the club on Christmas Eve, Carr said it "soured" his view of the town for a while.

Blackpool ready for biggest weekend ever

In his autobiography, Look Who It Is!, he wrote: "The one thing that does spoil the whole Blackpool experience, apart from the architecture, food, cleanliness and quality of entertainment, is the weather."

Carr, a regular visitor to the resort throughout his life, said: "I think it was just me putting on a bit of bravado and feeling sorry for my poor old dad for getting sacked.

"But I keep coming back here and obviously if I hated the place so much I wouldn't come and turn the Lights on or do my show up here.

"I love it up there really. There's so much to do.

"I do hope Blackpool can forgive and forget."

In an exclusive interview with The Gazette, Carr said he was thrilled to be awarded Blackpool's biggest honour – being named as the switch-on star.

And he also revealed his pride at following in some prestigious footsteps.

He said: "I can't believe it. I'm pinching myself.

"To follow the likes of Morecambe and Wise, Shirley Bassey and Peter Kay, I'm very flattered."

Citing gay nightclubs Funny Girls and Flamingo's as two of his favourite spots in the resort, along with The Opera House and the piers, Carr said he loved returning to his one-time home.

And he told The Gazette of the exciting moment he was asked to flick the switch.

"The call came to my agent," he said. He rang me and said would you like to go to Blackpool.

"They told me it was the switch-on and I said I would snap their hand off. It all went from there.

"People of Blackpool, come along, let your hair down and prepare to be turned on!"
