Campaign to reduce rape cases
DVDs warning young women about their alcohol intake will be shown in Preston nightclubs in a bid to reduce the risk of being raped.
It is among a series of proposals under police project Operation Focus, which aims to cut the number of victims in the county and improve the way rape is investigated.
The move will see taxi drivers, doormen and bar staff encouraged to step in if they see a "vulnerable" woman.
Posters displaying safety messages will be put up in casualty departments, GP's surgeries, taxis and pub toilets.
Reported rapes in Preston nearly doubled from five between April to June 2008 to nine the same period this year.
However, police say this is positive as it means more victims are having confidence to report what has sometimes been a taboo issue.
Det Insp Dave McKenna of Preston CID, said: "The message to women is to be aware of their own safety and the message to men is about true consent. We are targeting all women but predominantly those aged 18 to 30.
"It was decided to run the campaign over the summer as traditionally this is a period when people go out and have a drink – and alcohol is often a major factor in cases of sexual assault or rape.
"For this reason we may run the same initiative around Christmas."
