Bulldozers flatten holiday camp

IT is a sad end to a much-loved Blackpool tourism giant, just a year ago Pontin's was packed with families enjoying a holiday by the seaside.

But now bulldozers have moved on to the Clifton Drive North site – reducing it to a pile of rubble and twisted metal within hours.

And The Gazette can today reveal the camp's owners will start building new homes on the site within the next year.

The holiday park closed its doors last October after 50 years.

Now the once vibrant park, which rang out to the sound of singing, dancing and knobbly knees competitions, will give way to a modern housing development for a new generation.

Around 275 homes will be built on the site after plans were passed by Fylde Council.

A spokesman for site owners Northern Trust confirmed: "Following the successful planning approval for part of the Blackpool site, demolition works have commenced.

"Northern Trust is currently working on a disposal strategy and looking to commence negotiations with prospective house builders with a view to having new family homes constructed before the end of next year."

Negotiations between the council and Northern Trust, which is owned by former Blackpool Tower chief Trevor Hemmings, are taking place with the company promising to fund improvements close to the site.
