Blackpool loos flushed with pride over win
BLACKPOOL now boasts five star facilities when it comes to spending a penny.
The resort, which recently played host to the Royal Variety Performance, has proved its toilets really are fit for a queen after scooping a number of accolades in this year's Loo of the Year Awards.
As well as securing top spot in the national category for public toilet entries, the town achieved fifth place in the Premier League of local authority public toilet providers.
Each of the 19 toilets inspected in Blackpool received either a five or four star rating.
Coun Ian Fowler, cabinet member for business services, said: "All year round we aim to keep our public toilets up to scratch for both visitors and residents alike, and each year Blackpool has been recognised for having high standards."
The annual competition is run independently and promoted by the British Toilet Association and aims to encourage the highest possible standards in all types of 'away from home' or public toilets across the UK.
Coun Fowler, added: "We have millions of people heading to the town each year and having clean toilets with good facilities – such as baby changing areas and somewhere for your child to go to the toilet – make all the difference."
Blackpool's Solaris Centre was awarded five stars, as well as facilities at Central Beach, Central Car Park and in Bispham. This summer a new block of toilets was built on Central Car Park after the former conveniences – made famous in 2006 when they were transformed into a Chapel of Love for TV show Viva Blackpool! with David Morrissey – were demolished and replaced with three new Danfo toilets.
