Blackpool youth centre set for green light
A VIBRANT youth hub is a step closer to becoming a reality.
Councillors are being recommended to approve a planning application for the 4m Southpoint youth centre, earmarked for land next to Palatine Community Sports College in South Shore.
The futuristic building, designed with input from local youngsters, is made up of three elevated pods that will be clad in bright yellow material.
The centre is aimed at 13 to 19-year-olds from across Blackpool and will be open seven days a week, hosting activities ranging from circus skills to sports coaching, DJ training to bike maintenance.
A report to Blackpool Council's development control committee says the aim is to create "a bold architectural feature".
It adds: "The design of the building has been developed in consultation with local young people and is intended to be innovative and to stand out within the streetscene."
Rising to three storeys in total, the ground floor would accommodate a cafe and social area; office space and a meeting room would be on the first floor, and specific youth facilities would be on the second floor and in the pods.
