Blackpool bakery shows support for Murray

BRITAIN could be serving up a winner as Andy Murray storms through Wimbledon.

While his backhand slice makes him a serious contender, staff at a Blackpool bakery are showing their support by serving slices of their own, in honour of Britain's Wimbledon hopeful.

The world number three beat American Robert Kendrick in the first round, Latvian Ernests Gulbis in straight sets in the second, Victor Troicki in the third, and slammed Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka in the fourth.

And after seeing off Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in the fifth round of the competition, the 22-year-old ace meets American Andy Roddick in his first ever Wimbledon semi-final today.

Ruth Douglass, from Sayer's Bakery on Abingdon Street in central Blackpool, said staff had been going wild for Wimbledon.

She said: "Everyone has been getting behind Andy – they've been fighting for the early shift, which finishes at 3pm, so they can go and watch him on the TV.

"He has been appealing for everyone to get behind him, so all the staff asked if we could make an Andy Murray cake, to show our support."

And Sayer's staff are not the only ones rallying around the Scot, as Merton Council in Wimbledon have had to organise toilets and entertainment for the thousands of people queuing outside the gates hoping to make their way to Murray Mount.

With Fred Perry the last Brit to win Wimbledon in 1936, it's no wonder the success-starved nation is hoping for a victory on Sunday.

Mrs Douglass added: "The cake's been a big hit with the public, which shows how much everyone wants him to win. We're not selling it yet, but perhaps we'll let a charity have it if does win.

"We can't wait for the next match – and if he gets through he'll have beaten Federer six times out of eight, so he's in with a chance."

Roger Federer will play Tommy Haas in the other men's semi-final.

The Williams sisters will meet each other in the women's final.
