Bet the wedding belle

WEDDING bells rang out in Lytham for the TV wedding of one of soap's best loved stars.

As part of a busy Coronation Street outside filming schedule, much-loved character Bet Lynch tied the knot with Newton and Ridley brewery boss Cecil Newton at St John's church on East Beach.

A security cordon surrounded the picturesque church across the road from Lytham Windmill as Bet, played by Julie Goodyear, and soon-to-be-introduced Cecil exchanged vows.

Married

Cecil is played by actor George Baker, who is best-known as Inspector Wexford in The Ruth Rendell Mysteries.

The wedding is part of an upcoming storyline which will see Bet return to the show by heading to Blackpool for a Newton and Ridley brewery convention and deciding to get married.

Crowds gathered in Lytham as the couple arrived at St John's church in a blue Daimler. Butcher Fred Elliott (John Savident) was the best man and Liz McDonald (Beverley Callard) was bridesmaid.

A Coronation Street insider said: "The wedding was a low-key affair with just a handful of people there. Lytham was the perfect setting and the weather has been lovely."

Fans of the ITV soap will remember Bet's last appearance in 2002 when she briefly returned to Weatherfield for the retirement bash of hot-pot making barmaid Betty Turpin.

Bet has had a string of relationships with men in the soap since she first appeared on May 23, 1966, taking a job at a plastics factory and having an affair with her boss, John Benjamin.

Stars from the show have also been filming in Blackpool and Fleetwood recently as part of the next big storyline to hit the our screens next month when the McDonalds are re-united for the first time in over two years.

Steve McDonald and his girlfriend Karen, alias Simon Gregson and Suranne Jones, plus Steve's mum Liz have been filming at a Blackpool hotel. It was part of a plot line involving Steve's dad Jim going on the run from prison and meeting his ex-wife in town with Bet Lynch for the convention.
