Bakery to close

A BAKERY employing 84 members of staff is to close its doors.

Management at the Warburtons site on Brinwell Road, Marton, is entering a 90 day consultation period, but the bread maker is expected to leave Blackpool.

The decision was made by the family-run business because of the “continued challenging economic environment and changing demands on our business” and staff were made aware of the proposals at 11am today.

Coun Simon Blackburn, leader of Blackpool Council, said: “I, supported by the Council’s Economic Development Team, will work with Warburtons to try and retain some form of presence in Blackpool, and to protect as many jobs as possible - I regret to say I am not confident at this stage, this will be successful.

“The loss of these jobs, and the associated supply chain, potentially removes more than £1m from the local economy, in the depths of a double-dip recession.”

Are you a member of staff at the Warburtons site and willing to speak about the closure?

Call Alex Ross on (01253) 361725.
