Baby group to help out new mums and dads

A new mother and baby group for parents of twins, triplets, quadruplets and more is to be launched in Wigan.

Dubbed Jelly Babies, the group will provide a meeting place for mums and dads of twins and multiples – and their kids of course. The group will let parents share their know-how, make new friends and offer support to one another.

Gemma Pilkington, mum to non-identical 14-month-old twin boys Matthew and Jack, is the driving force behind the new group.

A single mum herself, the 24-year-old from Standish, knows from personal experience how much of a joy twins can be. But she also knows how much work it takes to look after them and hopes to build a support network for other parents through Jelly Babies.

Gemma said: "It was lovely, it was really nice when I found out I was going to have twins but it has been really hard work too.

"It is lovely because you get lots of smiles and cuddles but it can be really tough as well so it is nice when you speak to other mums with twins and swap stories, hints, tips and advice."

Although there are numerous mother and baby groups across Wigan, Gemma found there was a gap when it came to parents who have had multiple births.

Feeling a little isolated, Gemma joined the Twins and Multiple Births Association (Tamba), an organisation which aims to bring families together and encourages parents to set up mutual support groups in their local area.

Gemma felt it was something she wanted to do and she was supported by her health visitor, Jane Johnson, and nursery nurse, Tracey Davis, from Standish Clinic.

Gemma said: "Since I had the twins I've been going to the local mother and baby group at the clinic which is for everybody but being there has shown how different it is having twins.

"I know there's been a lot of twins born, recently. Just going in to Wigan I've seen loads about so I thought I would set something up myself."

Jelly Babies will meet for the first time between 10am and noon on Thursday June 5 at St Wilfrid's Church Hall, Standish.

The group is open to all parents of twins or multiples. For more information go to www.freewebs.com/twinsandmultiples.
