Apologies for 'Albert'

A MAN evicted from his home in the 1800s is said to haunt Lytham Library.

'Albert' is thought to be responsible for DVDs flying off shelves and heavy booted footsteps walking around derelict areas of the library where there is no public access.

Librarian Elaine Bevan said staff couldn't work out what was going on so enlisted the help of South Shore spiritualist medium Christine Hawkes last year.

Mrs Bevan said: "We would hear bangs and thuds, footsteps and door handles rattling. Lights would go on and off on their own.

"There was too much going on which we couldn't explain."

Staff at the Clifton Street library couldn't understand how DVDs flew off shelves towards cleaner Barrie Mallinson.

Mrs Bevan added: "We had two weeks of intense activity with the computers going haywire. Lights dimmed and came back on again. Barrie heard heavy booted footsteps walking up the stairs to rooms on the first floor which are cut off to the public. There were smells which I can only describe as burnt candles and candyfloss."

When spiritualist medium Christine Hawkes visited the library she described seeing a large burly man with an old fashioned shirt leaning on a fireplace, waving his fist and saying 'Go away, this is my home'.

She said: "We were experiencing great distress from a man called Albert. He felt like his home had been taken from him and he wanted an apology."

Librarians have since discovered a row of cottages were knocked down when the library was extended in 1898.

Mrs Bevan added: "We think Albert was evicted from the cottages and he just wanted an apology. So we put a bunch of flowers on the fireplace in one of the derelict rooms and said sorry to him."
