Anger at 190 extra new Quays homes

ALMOST 200 new homes could be built at a luxury Fylde housing development.

Property developers Kensington Developments want to create 190 new flats, maisonettes and houses and 4,000sq metres of office space at the Lytham Quays site off Dock Road.

The scheme, if successful, would extend the number of homes at the site to 450.

In its planning statement, in support of the development, Kensington described the scheme as part of a "considered approach" to regeneration.

It said: "The proposal is intended to deliver a viable, sustainable, mixed use regeneration scheme which addresses the needs of the area.

"The balance of uses (housing and business) more than satisfies the need for employment land in this part of the borough, goes towards addressing the significant shortfall of housing land in Fylde and delivers affordable housing.

"The application proposals represent a considered approach to the much-needed regeneration of the area."

But Alison Jack, from Defend Lytham, who have led opposition against the Lytham Quays development from the start, said: "Defend Lytham is always against inappropriate development.

"With the huge number of applications Kensington have already got in across the Fylde coast, which could change the entire landscape of the area, we feel another is entirely inappropriate.

"Not all the properties on Lytham Quays Phase One have sold yet."

The planning application is the latest bid by Kensington to extend the Quays scheme.

Originally the firm wanted to build 3,000 homes as part of a massive 700m plan for the former Cookson's Bakery site.

But, following a huge wave of public opposition led by pressure group Defend Lytham, the scheme was rejected by Fylde Council planners and the proposal was scrapped.

Instead the firm built a scaled down estate of 260 houses on the site and had announced plans to 337 more.

That too has now been scaled back by more than 140 houses.

Kensington Developments is also currently planning huge developments at Marton Moss, Blackpool, and Queensway in St Annes.

In total Kensington currently proposes to build almost 2,000 homes across the Fylde region.
