American producer hails Winter Gardens

The American producer and organiser of last weekend's annual RAQS Britannia Belly Dancing Festival has pledged his support for the beleaguered Winter Gardens.

"I love the Winter Gardens," said Miles Copeland – brother of Stewart Copeland, drummer with rock band The Police who he formerly managed.

And echoing the words of visitors to the Blackpool Magic Convention he added: "We have Americans who come in here to teach and their mouths drop open immediately and they go "Oh my God, what a beautiful place."

But having read recent reports that its Leisure Parcs owners feel the multi function venue no longer serves a purpose in it present

incarnation he said: "I hear rumours that there is a question mark for the future of the Winter Gardens and I hope Blackpool knows how beautiful this place is and keeps it because it is something very special.

"We have thought of organising the event elsewhere but it is very hard to beat the Winter Gardens. It's got everything – a lot of rooms, great atmosphere, the people are good here – it's perhaps not the easiest town to get to in the UK but it is worth the trip.

"There is something very special about this place and we have been successful here now for three years and I hope we will be able to carry on."

This year's event had repeated the success of the festival's previous two visits, said Miles.

"When we started to plan the event we were kind of worried

because of all the news regarding the economy but it's been great – attendance has been great, people have had a good time and I think everybody had good prices on merchandise too," he said.

"We always try to make sure that when people shop in the Souk here that they walk out with bargains and I think that has worked well. I think all the vendors are happy too.

"There has been a lot of great dancing. We gave a couple of new girls the opportunity to dance with us. They had the chance to dance with the Belly Dance Super Stars and that is fun. We like to make Belly Dance open to as wide an audience as possible and to show them something that is fun and can compete with other forms of dance such as ballet or River Dance etc and I think this event is one of those places we can do that successfully."
