Abortion protest set for resort

ANTI-abortion campaigners will be forming a "human chain" in Blackpool as part of a nationwide protest on Saturday.

The pro-life demonstrators, from the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) will stand at the side of the road on the Promenade, near the Tower, holding placards to "bring home the reality of abortion."

Tony Mullett, SPUC regional officer organiser of the Prolife Chains, said: "This will be a silent and peaceful demonstration. Our aim is to get the message across that not only does abortion kill the unborn child, but it also harms the mother.

"We want people to realise the harm abortion does. There will probably be about two dozen or so people in Blackpool, roughly what we had last year.

"Blackpool is one of 50 places in England, Wales and Scotland taking part in the protest this weekend.

Message

"We are hoping to get the message across to passing motorists and we should be there about two hours.

"We chose this date because it is the closest Saturday to the date that the 1967 Abortion Act came into effect – on April 27, 1968.

"We will be commemorating the lives that have been lost over that 40 years – as to date there have been more than seven million abortions in the UK.

"Our group would like to see a change in the law and see abortions outlawed. We also want to see more support for women, so they feel they have more choice.

"Abortion is so often these days seen as a quick fix, but we want to stress the hurt it causes."
