A dim view of Pier bid?
A BEAUTY – or a beast? Now, people of Fleetwood have the chance to make up their own minds about the idea for a hotel on the old pier site with plans and pictures now on display at the town's central library.
Site lease-holders Simmo Developments wants the four-storey art-deco building to replace the wrecked pier which burnt down in September 2008.
A small Gazette sample found strong opposition to the scheme, but it did have its defenders.
They included John and Joyce Parkes of Ennerdale Avenue.
Mrs Parkes said: "I think it's lovely – it wants something to liven this place up. It looks more Eastbourne than Fleetwood."
Mr Parkes added: "Rooms will not be 30 a night because they are going to be very nice, but something needs to be done."
But Peter Agnew, of Dryden Road, said: "I am totally against it. I don't think there should be housing or anything on that side of the promenade.
"It should be on the other side so people can look at the views.
"If they get the go-ahead for this Wyre Borough will be saying they can build housing next: they did try to do it once before.
"As it is now it's beautiful and you can see all round the bay."
Hilda Hodkinson, from Cleveleys, countered: "It looks a nice building.
"But will you get people to stay in Fleetwood?
"It's a little way out of Blackpool but there is easy access and I think it's a very attractive building and it will have lovely views out to sea."
Jacqueline Beavers of High Gate said: "We have the North Euston: why do we need another big hotel. And the parking is going to be atrocious.
"It's the wrong thing. We have nothing on the seaward side of the prom.
We had the pier and that should have been rebuilt. This has a lot of amenities so they are only going to take business from others in the town."
Another opponent was Eileen Fullalove, of Ribble Road, who said: "It's a lovely building but I don't think it's the right place.
"What about parking? There isn't anywhere.
"People come to sit on Fleetwood promenade but if the parking is taken up they are not going to come."
A woman who regularly visits Fleetwood from Hambleton said: "I think it looks OK, but what about the people who live across the road? They have bought their houses thinking there would never be anything in front."
Views about the plans can be e-mailed to planning@wyrebc.gov.uk or posted to the council at the Civic Centre, Poulton, FY6 7PU.
