A stitch in time to mark special year

Blackpool Quilters unveiled their quilt celebrating the main events of 2012

Blackpool Quilters unveiled their quilt celebrating the main events of 2012

IT has certainly been a year to remember.

Nationally it has seen the Olympic Games and the Jubilee, while highlights closer to home have included the arrival of the new trams and the Open Golf.

And now all these events have been celebrated in needlework thanks to the hard work of a dedicated group of Blackpool of stitchers.

They began work in February on their celebration quilt which will be on display in Central Library on Queen Street until mid October.

Only one thing is missing from the work – the Blackpool Quilters had hoped Blackpool FC would be back in the Premier League.

Heart

Group member Sandra Ainscow said: “The last time we made a celebration quilt was for the Millennium, but because 2012 was also such a special year we decided to do another one this year.

“We asked everyone in the club to make a heart and we ended up with 20 blocks made by 20 people.

“We then added the lettering, which was very tricky, and then we added the bunting.

“In May we put work on hold because we were waiting to see if Blackpool Football Club would get back into the Premier League, as that would have been another reason to celebrate. But sadly they didn’t manage it.”

The club, which was set up 15 years ago, is made up of about 30 members and meets every Monday night at the Molyneux Community Centre in South Shore.

Pat Fisher has had a picture of one of her quilts printed in the Chelsea Football Club programme.

She said: “My grandaughter is a Chelsea fan so I made a quilt for her with the club badges on and she sent a picture to the club who put it in their programme. I remember every time I picked it up to sew, if they were playing that night, they won!”

Anyone interested in joining the quilters can call (01253) 734369.
