A 21st Century Tower

LEISURE bosses have revealed how Blackpool Tower will be restored to its former glory over the next five years.

Entertainment giant Merlin was only appointed as operators by the council three months ago, but has already come up with ambitious proposals to plant the Victorian landmark firmly in the 21st century.

And Iain Hawkins, head of Merlin's operations in Blackpool, unveiled a bold blueprint to keep the Tower at the heart of tourism in the town.

He said: "We hope the Tower will not only be returned to its former glory, but will also be proven to be one of the most successful commercial ventures in Blackpool."

Merlin's plans include a 4D cinema and a new indoor white-knuckle ride.

Tower to be 'free for all'

A planning application for the new Blackpool Tower Dungeon will be submitted on August 9, while work - paid for out of the council's funding package - has already begun on repairs to the exterior of the ballroom roof.

The Dungeon, part of Merlin's "Horrible Histories" brand, will take visitors back through time to the days of the Pendle Witch Trials and Oliver Cromwell, while residents will be asked to submit their ideas for further local themes. It is due to open in autumn 2011.
