£500,000 project to breathe life into prom

A DAZZLING sculpture trail detailing the myths of the coast could transform Cleveleys and Fleetwood seafront.

The 500,000 project will allow residents to appreciate the area's unique history and legends.

Every child in the borough would be given a copy of a book about the myths and families could walk along the newly created 'mythic coast' trail if the bid is successful.

Artist Stephen Broadbent, who designed the Cleveleys People's Promenade, is one of the driving forces behind the new plans. The creation of the area would reach a climax in July 2012, with a Mythic Coast Festival.

National children's laureate, Michael Rosen, has also expressed an interest.

Wyre Council's head of planning and regeneration, Garry Payne, said: "It's linked to the Olympics.

"The object is to have other events taking place round the country at the same time, hence the reason it's June and July 2012."

Drawn into the mythic coast story would be tales of the area's lost villages, the petrified forest and shipwrecks.

Wyre Council bosses have teamed up with residents, Lancashire County Council, the Lancashire and Blackpool Tourism Board, the North West Development Agency, English Heritage, Fleetwood Marine Hall, Fleetwood Museum and the civic society, to form the Wyre Way partnership.

Results of the bid for the project should be known by the end of July.

New 60m sea defences are already planned at Fleetwood. Proposals include replacing the seawall at Rossall, which experts warn could fail within five years if nothing is done. The wall protects 6,300 homes.

Plans to regenerate Fleetwood seafront were announced earlier this week.

They include a 2m proposal to revamp the Marine Hall, create a huge 'wing' sculpture at a new bird watching centre at Rossall Point, an education zone at the Marine Gardens and a skateboarding park.

At Rossall Mr Broadbent envisages a beachcomber theme with heavy sections of timber scattered like driftwood and "other seemingly found objects formed in iron set along the beach and interacting with the tides, with other found elements thrown directly on to the promenade."

The park in front of the North Euston Hotel at Fleetwood is seen as a potential gateway to the Coastal Way and Mr Broadbent believes a design competition for a new Euston Square would attract international interest.
