£2.7m Blackpool seafront wedding chapel approved
FORGET beachside ceremonies in the Maldives – couples will soon be able to tie the knot on Blackpool's world famous seafront after the resort's £2.7m new wedding chapel got the go-ahead.
Construction work is due to begin next summer after councillors said "I do" to approving the proposal, and gave it planning permission.
The new venue should be ready to host its first wedding in Spring 2011. It will be built on the Tower Festival Headland, and will also boast a rooftop terrace, a wedding tower with picture windows and a restaurant. The original plans were adapted to include larger window space allowing more light to flow throughout the structure – creating stunning views over the shoreline.
Doug Garrett, chief executive of ReBlackpool which submitted the plans, said: "Many couples long for a beachside wedding but often can't combine their dreams with guest requirements – now they can have the best of both worlds.
"I'm very pleased Blackpool will be able to offer an innovative setting for couples wanting to marry in a venue with 'wow' factor.
"The new building will be a fantastic talking point and an impressive addition to the Promenade.
"With a keen focus on reducing carbon emissions and using sustainable building materials, it's going to be a much loved landmark on the coastline in more ways than one."
The ceremony room will be relocated from its current site at Blackpool Register Office on South King Street.
People can only book ceremonies 12 months in advance, but Blackpool's superintendent registrar David Hill said there was already interest from couples in the new venue.
He said: "If anyone does contact us showing interest, we will take details of couples and then try to work out who would be first to get married there.
"We are hoping it will be one of the nicest venues in the country, and we are looking to attract couples from throughout England and Wales.
"We already get people from out of town. For example, if couples met in Blackpool, they sometimes want to get married here, but it's also part of the improving standards in Blackpool for residents."
The structure will be built from solid timber as a durable, high strength alternative to steel, and clad in gold coloured, stainless steel shingles.
Designers dRMM Architects are leaders in the delivery of solid timber architecture, which can be prefabricated making it possible for carpenters to assemble the core of the building in a very short space of time.
The 2.7m development costs have been met by the Northwest Development Agency.
