A LANCASHIRE man has been named as one of four people killed in an avalanche in the Scottish Highlands.

Christopher William Bell, 24, was climbing with a party of five others near Glencoe on Saturday afternoon.

The Phd student died when his party, all experienced winter walkers, was caught up in the avalanche in an area known as Church Door Buttress.

Another man and two women were found dead after a major search and rescue operation was launched by mountain rescue teams.

One woman is in a critical condition in hospital in Glasgow and one man survived.

Mr Bell, from Balderstone, near Blackburn, was studying for a Phd in Ocean Mapping in Oban, Northern Constabulary has said.

Police initially reported Mr Bell was from the Blackpool area, but have now confirmed his family are from east Lancashire.
