POLICE are hunting a knife-wielding thug who slashed a woman’s face during a shocking street attack.
The 25-year-old was walking along Elizabeth Street, in central Blackpool, on her way to work when she was set upon by a man with a ‘diamond shaped’ blade.
The brave woman fought against her attacker after he jumped out of an alley way just after the junction with Butler Street.
As she struggled against the knifeman, they both ended up on the ground.
The victim, who works as a member of door staff at a venue in the resort, then managed to get to her feet and run off.
Det Insp Tony Baxter, of Blackpool Police, said: “This must have been an horrific and frightening attack on a lone woman.
“She was on her way to work when noticed a male in an alleyway.
“He has come at her with a knife and she has managed to fight him off. During the struggle she has ended up with a number of cuts on her face.
“She has made her way to work and then made contact with the police.”
The victim was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital for treatment.
Police are now appealing for anyone with information about the incident, which happened around 10.20pm on Friday, to come forward.
Officers would also like to speak to a man who was on Seed Street car park shortly after the attack and asked the victim if she was okay.
Det Insp Baxter added: “Attacks of this kind are extremely rare. Extra patrols are being put in place in the area. We have conducted house to house inquiries, a trawl of CCTV and carried out forensic investigations.
“We would appeal for anyone who was in the vicinity of Elizabeth Street who may have seen a male who matches the description of this man or has any information to come forward.
“Are you someone who has a relative or knows someone who matches the description? I would appeal for you to come forward.”
The attacker is described as between 28 and 35-years-old, white, 5ft 9in tall, with short brown hair shaved at the sides and longer on top.
He was wearing light blue jeans, a navy blue zip up tracksuit top with an elastic fleece cuff and neck, with a white stripe round.
His footwear is described as black Puma velcro fastening trainers.
He also had pock marked skin.
