AN inquest has opened into the tragic death of a St Annes man.

Michael Wild, 68, died on Saturday following a blaze at his home on Lightburne Avenue.

A post-mortem was carried out at Blackpool Victoria Hospital but further tests now need to be made to determine the cause of death.

PC Helen Leeson, Blackpool coroner’s officer, said: “Around 2am on January 8, residents of one of the flats on Lightburne Avenue smelled smoke from the flat below which was on fire.

“They called Lancashire Fire and Rescue, the police and ambulance. Mr Wild was declared dead at the premises.”

Fire chiefs, who have carried out an investigation, say the cause of the fire was a portable LPG gas heater.

It is thought Mr Wild had placed clothing on the heater or placed it near flammable clothing and there was no fire alarm fitted in the flat.

The inquest was adjourned to allow more inquiries take place.
