A MAN has been branded a hopeless criminal after attempting to hide under loft insulation when police surrounded the premises he was burgling.

Lee Freeman of Hawes Side Lane, Marton admitted raiding a former newsagent when he appeared before Blackpool magistrates.

Jim Mowbray, prosecuting, said Freeman had been spotted going into the empty premises by a member of the public. Police officers were called and they surrounded the shop.

When the officers made themselves known to him Freeman headed for the attic where he unsuccessfully tried to hide under loft insulation placed there.

The prosecution said Freeman had gathered some copper piping during the raid which he had planned to remove from the premises.

Malcolm Cartwright, defending, said his client’s list of criminal offences had been escalating in recent times.

Mr Cartwright added: “The robberies he has carried out have been recklessly stupid. Basically he is a useless criminal who is easily led.

“In the latest offence, this was am empty shop where there was little or nothing to steal.”

Freeman was jailed for 14 weeks.
