Excitement is building as eagle-eyed residents have turned star stalkers in a bid to spot the big names arriving in town for this year’s Open.
Rumours are flying round Lytham and St Annes that a whole host of star-names are already on the Fylde coast – some more confirmed than others.
Twitter followers began stories of Will Smith being spotted in St Annes Square, Sean Connery leaving the course at Royal Lytham while Hollywood heart-throb George Clooney – well he’s just everywhere from having a pint in Ansdell to shopping for soft furnishings in Stringers.
Jack’s Bistro, in St Annes, has already welcomed some star names with American Ryder Cup captain Davis Love dining there on Sunday.
Owner Keith Blackburn said: “He came as a part of a group of 10 and he might be back again later in the week. It’s always a good boost and there’s excitement in the town. I’m sure there will be a few other celebrities in but we have to respect their privacy.”
And at popular Lytham pub The Taps, on Henry Street, staff are waiting excitedly to see which celebrities might come through the door in search of a pint of real ale.
Manager David Hirst said: “The main rumour I’ve heard is about George Clooney being in the area, but we’ve not had any celebrities in yet – that we’ve noticed anyway.
“Miguel Angel Jiminez was in Portofinos next door on Sunday, but not actually in here. We normally get the camera crews and the staff – the real ale people – but I would like some celebrities.”
Clooney’s private jet was allegedly spotted at BAE Warton – but the firm said it was not aware of any aircraft coming in, though a spokesman added it “would respect the confidentiality of people using the airfield”.
