A new theatre bar is set to be opened as part of the next phase of the upgrade of the Winter Gardens.
Plans have been unveiled to refurbish the former Bar Red on Church Street, which has been empty for some time.
It comes as work is already underway to refurbish the front of the landmark.
A spokesman for the Winter Gardens said: “The new theatre bar, which will open in December, will complement our existing food and drink offering, providing a new hub for pre and post show drinks while providing a unique dining hub during the daytime and evenings.
“The venue will specialise in gourmet burgers, which has been chosen to complement the existing dining offering both provided by the Winter Gardens and neighbours in St Johns Square and further highlights our commitment of investment in the Winter Gardens and its restoration.”
The development is in response to the recent success of the Winter Gardens which was visited by more than 100,000 people this summer during the 12-week run of hit musical Mamma Mia!
It is proposed to replace the doors of the bar to better compliment the existing architecture of the Grade II listed building, while internally posters from past shows will decorate the walls.
A design brief with the planning application says: “Following the commercial success of the shows at the Opera House there is a real opportunity to create a new facility that will appeal to theatre goers for drinks and refreshments.”
