The midwife-led unit at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, which state of the art birthing rooms, has been officially opened.

The £680,000 unit, based next to the hospital’s Women and Children’s Unit, opened its doors to mums-to-be and their families in August, and has already seen more than 180 babies born.

Little Amber Louise Perry was the first to be born in the unit.

Now six months old, she was invited to the opening, along with mum Kelly Perry, 27.

She said: “It’s nice to be invited back.

“At the time I didn’t know I was the first to give birth there, it only hit home when Amber was born. But it was a lovely experience.”

The unit was officially opened yesterday by Cathy Warwick CBE, general secretary of the Royal College of Midwives.

She said: “It is important that women have a choice about how they give birth.”
