Super skater Dan Whiston is determined to keep dancing – even if it’s not on ice!

And Dan, who lives in Poulton, wants Fylde coast residents to join him getting in the groove by launching his own Zumba fitness classes across the area.

Dan has a long history of working in dance and putting together choreography, having starred in the Pleasure Beach’s Hot Ice show, and all nine series of hit ITV show Dancing on Ice, which he won three times.

So he decided to put his skills to good use and fulfil his long-term ambition to train as a Zumba instructor.

Now he has set up classes across the Fylde, including at Ribby Hall Village in Wrea Green, Velocity Health and Fitness at De Vere Village Blackpool, Wendy Holland’s Fitness Studios in Thornton and FX Leisure, Poulton.

His first session is on Tuesday, and he says he can’t wait to get moving with local residents.

He said: “I’ve wanted to do Zumba for years and years, but I was so busy I never had chance.

“Now Dancing on Ice has finished, I finally have a chance to start doing my own Zumba classes. I absolutely love it.

“It will enable me to take elements of all the things I’ve done before, all my experience and put it into my classes.

“Obviously, I’ve worked on choreography and dance moves on Dancing on Ice, I also worked on the Olympic opening ceremony, and recently went to America with Beth Tweddle to do some choreography work for NBC.

“My aim is to make the classes fun, because what I love about Zumba is the way it’s a workout in disguise.

“You don’t realise you’re doing exercise because you’re having so much fun.

“My aim is to infuse some of the elements of the dances I’ve done on Dancing on Ice
into the routines, so they will be ones people know and love – like a Bollywood-themed routine to Jai Ho.

“There’s nothing complicated though. My aim is to make it easy to follow, keep it simple and effective.”

Dan says the great thing about Zumba is all ages and fitness levels can do it.

He added: “People can work at their own level and step it up a gear, or pull back to suit them.

“And I do hope to encourage men to come along to the classes.

“Often I think men are worried about looking ‘sissy’ or they won’t be able to work to the beat. They can adapt moves if they want to and man it up!

“I think once people try it, they will enjoy it and be hooked.

“I’m really excited about this new venture, and can’t wait for my first class.”

Dan’s classes run at the following venues – non-members of the health clubs can Pay As You Go for sessions: Wendy Holland Fitness, Thornton, Tuesdays 6.15pm, Fridays 7.30pm; Ribby Hall Village, Wrea Green, Wednesdays, 7pm; Velocity Health and Fitness, DeVere Village Heron’s Reach, Blackpool, Wednesdays 5pm, from July 23; FX Leisure, Poulton, Fridays, 6pm.
