THE Gazette can reveal the dirtiest places to eat in Blackpool.
The Gazette names the 14 takeaways, restaurants and hotels across the resort which have received zero stars out of a possible five when they were visited by hygiene inspectors last year.
And Blackpool Council today called on them to “drive up standards” in order to bring their businesses up to scratch.
While most of the eateries we have named have either declined to comment or were uncontactable, staff at one premises claim it has cleaned up its act and say it fully expects to be given a higher rating the next time the inspectors come calling.
Sunny Hao, who works at Lucky House, on Coronation Street, South Shore, said: “We didn’t get the rating we wanted but the hygiene should be fine now.
“Before we open and after we close we clean the kitchen in the restaurant and make sure the food is fresh.
“We didn’t know about the ratings when we were inspected but we should be fine next time.”
Coun Gillian Campbell, cabinet member for housing and public protection, said: “Food hygiene ratings are a good thing which help to protect consumers.
“They force eating establishments to drive up standards or suffer the consequences.
“I am sure people will vote with their feet if restaurants, takeaways and other venues fail to meet even the most basic standards of hygiene by scoring zero ratings.
“We would encourage people to look out for the food hygiene stickers in the window of restaurants and other establishments which show their latest rating. If no sticker is displayed, ask yourselves why.” Those receiving a zero rating are as follows:
Ali’s Takeaway, on Central Drive, whose food hygiene and safety was described by inspectors as “very poor”, with “little” confidence in the management. The manager was not there when The Gazette contacted them.
Coral Cantonese and Peking, on Highfield Road, South Shore, were described as “poor”, with “little” confidence in the management. They declined to comment.
Good All, on Watson Road, South Shore, was described as “bad”, with “no” confidence in the management. It is closed until March 2.
Ho Ho’s Chinese and Thai Cuisine, on Waterloo Road, South Shore, was rated “poor”, with “little” confidence in the management. They declined to comment.
Kebab Express, on Central Drive, was “poor”, with “little” confidence in the management. The manager was not there when contacted by The Gazette.
Kebab House, on Foxhall Road, South Shore, described as “fair”, but with “little” confidence in the management. The manager was also unavailable.
Lucky House, on Coronation Street, South Shore, was rated “bad”, with “little” confidence in the management.
Lucky Star, on Eastpines Drive, Anchorsholme, was “bad”, with “no” confidence in the management.
Royal George Hotel, on Tyldesley Road, South Shore, described as “bad”, with “little” confidence in the management. No-one could be reached for comment.
Waterloo Hotel, on Waterloo Road, South Shore, described as “bad”, with “no” confidence in the management.
Welbeck Hotel, on Queens Promenade, described as “bad”, with “little” confidence in the management. No-one was at either hotel when The Gazette called.
Yangs Kitchen, on Hawes Side Lane, described as “bad”, with “no” confidence in the management. They declined to comment. Yanks, on Church Street, was “fair”, with “no” confidence in the management. They declined to comment. Zheng’s, on Hawes Side Lane, described as “poor”, with “little” confidence in the management. They declined to comment.
Blackpool Council is responsible for inspecting 1,267 different premises across the resort.
This includes 443 hotels, 267 bed and breakfasts and guest houses, 253 restaurants, cafes and canteens, 109 care premises (such as hospitals, care homes, and childcare centres), 76 retailers, 51 pubs, bars and nightclubs, 18 schools and colleges, 16 mobile caterers and other catering premises, three supermarkets and one manufacturer.
