Around 20 hardened swimmers took to the ice cold waters of the Irish Sea to help raise funds for a young boy’s vital operation.

The dip was organised by Blackpool Aquatics Triathlon Squad (BATS) to help raise money for seven-year-old Ben Brown, who was diagnosed with an aggressive tumour in 2011.

His family are currently hoping to raise £48,000 so Ben can have treatment for the tumour in the USA.

Robert Hudson, 47, was among those to brave the freezing tide. Mr Hudson, from Elswick Place, South Shore, said: “It was very cold.

“The funny thing was most of us were in their wet suits but mine didn’t have anything for my feet so they were absolutely freezing.

“They were just on fire with pain but I managed to get fully underwater and do three strokes and that was me done.

“It was a little bit late notice because the weather was so bad over Christmas time.

“Some people swam in only their trunks which was very brave.”

Over the past two years young Ben, a pupil at Our Lady of the Assumption Primary School in Marton, has had the tumour removed, received chemotherapy and radiotherapy and even spent two weeks in isolation as part of his treatment.

But in June his family were told he had relapsed.

It is hoped donations from the New Year’s Day swim will reach into the hundreds of pounds.

Mr Hudson added: “It was for a great cause and we had a good turnout.

“It was a good day and hopefully we should raise a few hundred pounds to go to young Ben.”

Some of those taking part in the swim weere even dressed in very colourful Superman suits and marvel comic swimwear to brave the elements of the harsh Irish Sea at Starr Gate and dive into the waves.
