For most people, signing up to take part in a 10k requires training and a positive attitude.
But for the people behind the event, it requires a lot more work and support.
Trinity Hospice is currently organising this year’s Beaverbrooks Blackpool 10k Fun Run, which takes place along Promenade on Sunday, May 11, and staff are busy making sure they have everything they need to make the event the success it always us.
Trinity is expecting around 3,000 runners to take part in the run, which means they need to make 3,000 medals and have 3,000 bottles of water ready on the day.
It also needs 1,000 paper cups and is expecting to process 400 entry forms as people wait until the last minute to sign up.
Around 350 runners are expected to turn up in fancy dress, and last year costumes included a Spartan, a pantomime donkey in a sombrero, three clowns and an Incredible Hulk.
In putting on the run, Trinity, which is based on Low Moor Road, Bispham, needs 150 metal barriers to cordon off the route, 120 volunteer marshals to help show the way and 41 road closures to make sure no traffic is on the road while people are taking part.
It also needs five metres of finish tape, four blocks of portable toilets, two timing clocks and one street sweeping machine.
And of course every fun run needs one winner, and last year’s finished with a time of 31 minutes, 39 seconds.
Trinity’s fundraising manager Linzi Young said: “Many people don’t realise how much goes into organising an event as big as the Blackpool 10K.
“There are so many things to think about to make sure it’s a really great experience for everyone taking part.
“The one thing we can’t order is the weather, and we are hoping for a sunny day, though I know the conditions don’t do anything to deter the serious athletes.”
The event still requires some volunteers who can help on the day. Linzi added: “If anyone would like to volunteer to help marshal on the day, we’d love to hear from them – it’s a good way to take part without having to be a runner”
Anyone aged 11 and up can take part in the run, which sets off from Blackpool Hilton and runs to Blackpool Pleasure Beach and back.
Children must be accompanied by an adult.
