A leading dietitian at Blackpool Victoria Hospital is calling on people to make a single change to reduce their sugar intake.
It comes as the Government and food industry is lobbied by obesity experts to reduce the sugar content of food by 30 per cent to reverse what they are branding an obesity epidemic.
Emma Shepherd, head of dietetics at The Vic, said: “As dietitians we are acutely aware of the impact of excess sugar consumption in someone’s diet.
“Dietitians at Blackpool Victoria Hospital are advocates of the recent Change4life campaign working both with individuals and the hospital catering team to achieve changes that will impact favourably on their health.
“Change4Life is calling on families across the nation to sign up to ‘Smart Swaps’ and make one easy change, like swapping sugary drinks to sugar-free, no added sugar, milk or water, for the month of January.”
Blackpool public health practitioner Jackie Heighton added: “Blackpool Health and Well Being Board has agreed a Healthy Weight Action Plan, which includes developing a healthier catering award to reduce sugar and fats in some foods in local takeaways, restaurants and workplace catering facilities, ensuring customers can easily identify the healthier choices.”
