Aqua girls are our hospice heroes

DWs Water Babes have raised 150 for our Hospice Heroes appeal for Trinity Hospice and Brian House childrens hospice.

A sponsored aqua class has raised £150 for The Gazette’s Hospice Heroes campaign.

The aqua-aerobics group which meets at DW Sports, on Vicarage Lane, Marton, decided they would get sponsored for one of their classes to help boost our appeal, which is raising money for a much needed refurbishment at Trinity Hospice and Brian House children’s hospice.

Elaine Watts is a member of the group, which calls itself DW’s Water Babes.

She said: “Everybody knows someone who has been cared for at Trinity Hospice.

“We’re a group of about 30 ladies or so, and decided we could each be sponsored to raise money for The Gazette’s appeal.”

Mrs Watts has already raised money for Hospice Heroes by selling tea, coffee and cakes from her home at Midgeland Road Riding School in South Shore.

She added: “So many people are either members of DW’s Water Babes or know of us enough to help us raise money.

“What we did wasn’t a big effort, but anything we can do to help we will.

“It doesn’t matter if people don’t have a lot of money, but just giving a little to The Gazette’s campaign will make all the difference.”
We are aiming to raise £200,000 for a refurbishment which is currently being carried out at the hospice on Low Moor Road, Bispham.

It will see new single rooms created for privacy and dignity in Trinity, and private family areas built.

The windows, original furniture and many of the fittings will also be replaced in the first refit the hospice has had in its 28-year history.

At Brian House the living room is being made bigger to accommodate more children who require a bed in the day time. The bedrooms will be made brighter and safer, and work is being done to bring the kitchen area up to date and to allow older children access to the facilities.

The money we raise is being put together with a government grant of £280,000 to pay for the project.
