FIFTY-five hospital staff have been axed as part of multi-million pound health cuts to hit the Fylde coast.

Wesham Hospital is to close while the next phase of Blackpool Victoria Hospital’s £13.3m Women’s and Children’s unit has been put on hold.

Bosses at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust say they must take drastic measures in the wake of Government demanding the NHS find £20bn of efficiency savings nationally.

The 55 Fylde-based staff – who had been informed their jobs were at risk – have now been made redundant, while the trust is asking its non-clinical staff to consider taking voluntary redundancy.

Slashing the number of managers will save £1.5m while the trust is looking to save a further £4.5m across its corporate services – human resources, finance and information management and technology. All capital projects will be put on hold.

Aidan Kehoe, the Blackpool trust’s chief executive, said: “The level of savings the NHS is required to deliver over the next three to four years is unprecedented.
