Two health workers were today hailed heroes after they went “above and beyond” the call of duty to save the life of a patient’s wife.

Sarah Pettigrew and Phil Lamb, both health care assistants at Spiral Health, visited the home of Carol Middleton when she failed to turn up to see her husband, Joe, who is a patient at the private Bispham facility.

When they got there, they found she had fallen, probably the night before, hitting her head and stomach so hard it had caused internal bleeding.

Phil, 38, today said if he and Sarah hadn’t visited when they did, Carol, 70, might not have survived.

“If things had been different that day and we weren’t able to get to the house, she might still be there now,” he said.

“She might have passed away or be in an even worse state. I am proud of what I have done.”

Sarah, 34, and Phil spent 20 minutes outside in the rain on Sunday looking through the windows at the Middleton’s home on Inglewood Close in Larkholme, Fleetwood, to try to spot Carol.

When they finally heard someone shouting for help from inside, they immediately called police who broke into the house.

Carol is currently on the high-dependency unit at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, where she is recovering.

Joe, 67 – a former prison officer who is at Spiral receiving help for a split kneecap – said: “My wife visited on Saturday morning and told me she would come and see me on Sunday, but there was nothing.

“I was ringing up but there was no answer and I was just thinking that something had gone wrong.

“I was getting really worried, and I was not able to get to the house. There was nothing I could do.”

It was then that Phil and Sarah reassured worried Joe they would go and check on Carol. Joe said his wife was getting better in hospital.

“Everything has been a bit chaotic, but the staff here really give 110 per cent to help anyone in anyway they can,” he added. “They are absolutely marvellous.”

Sarah, from Kirkham, said: “I do feel proud of myself, but I was just doing my job and looking after my patient.”

Chris Walbank, head of business development at Spiral Health on Ryscar Way, said: “We are really proud of Phil and Sarah.

“They have truly gone above and beyond.”
